[Placeholder — to be written in your own words.] The UAE's banking history is, in many ways, the story of the country itself — a rapid transformation from a handful of foreign branches serving the pearl and oil trades into one of the most sophisticated financial systems in the world, all within the span of a single lifetime. This archive grew out of a personal interest in documenting that story properly, in both Arabic and English, and making it accessible to anyone curious about how the country's financial institutions came to be.
It is an independent project, unaffiliated with any bank, institution, or government body. All research is conducted from public sources.
[Placeholder.] Each entry draws on a combination of official bank histories, central bank records, contemporary press coverage, and published academic and financial literature. Where exact dates are uncertain, this is noted within the relevant entry. The archive is bilingual by design — Arabic is not a translation layer but an equal voice, and where the two languages diverge in nuance, both are preserved.
The archive currently documents all national banks founded within the UAE, together with a small number of foreign institutions whose early presence was formative to the development of banking in the region. It does not attempt to cover every foreign bank that has operated in the country. Coverage will deepen and expand as research progresses.
